- You’re up for full training. We will look after the cost.
- You’ll do part of your training on a course with some work experience and the rest on-the-job, all while earning credits and fast-tracking towards a National Infrastructure Qualification — (you could gain your qualification in half the time it usually takes.)
- The For Real team will work out what training and employment will best suit you and place you on a course at one of four great industry programmes in Christchurch:
- CPIT – 8 weeks and work experience
- UBUILDFORTHEREBUILD – 6 weeks
- CTC – 34 week program (2 days CTC, 3 days secondary school)
- TAI POUTINI – 8 weeks
- Learn real skills for a range of jobs repairing Christchurch’s roading and underground piping.
- Your skills will be highly transferable – you’ll be able to use them elsewhere and for other jobs.

Having the right attitude and the staying power to see it through is important for you, your future and your future employer. For Real commits to cover your training costs as long as you commit to the following:
- Training must be attended and completed successfully
- If you accept a job offer, follow it through
If you fail to do either of the above you’ll have to repay costs in full.
Training providers
The Christchurch training providers involved with For Real offer a wide range of programmes aimed at jobs in the infrastructure industry. Programmes and their content and standards have been developed with the help of InfraTrain. The industry-training organisation for the infrastructure industry. Ongoing work-place training programmes are aligned with wider NZQA qualifications.
What training?
CPIT – Civil Construction programme
(8 weeks full time) (14 unit standards completed)
Best suited for candidates with an interest in civil construction. Good programme for those with no experience. CPIT courses include generic civil construction labouring skills.
Skills on completion:
- Wheels, Tracks and Rollers, Site Safe, Traffic Control, First Aid
- Knowledge of the industry
- Health and Safety on site
- Hand digging
- Hand spreading and compaction
- Read and interpret plans
- Small plant operation
Tai Poutini – Water, Pipe laying and Drainage Programme
Opawa CPIT Trades site (8 weeks) (15 unit standards)
Candidates with an interest in water, pipe work and drainage. Given the skills of a pipe labourer in the industry, it would be advantageous to have few life skills and a bit of knowledge. Ideal for career changers.

- Knowledge and skills around trenching operations
U Build For The Rebuild – Construction Programme Transition
(6 weeks) (18 unit standards completed)
Funded by Salvation Army. EQ Appeal fund.
Best suited for candidates with an interest in civil construction. Salvation Army has fully funded this programme. They are providing a programme that allows candidates who need a little extra assistance and a “helping hand”. This course has two weeks of life and work skills with four weeks of civil construction training.

- Knowledge of the industry
- Health and Safety on site

- Life skills, teamwork, confidence
Canterbury Tertiary College – Construction Awareness Programme
(for students enrolled in a Canterbury secondary school)
(40 NZQF credits at L1 & L2 recognised for NCEA)
This option is for students that are still attending high school. It provides a taster of the civil construction industry as a career option.
Students will complete 2 days a week (Thursday & Friday) at CTC (CPIT Trades Innovation Institute) and the remaining 3 days at high school.
Skills on completion:
- Site Safe, Traffic Control, First Aid and Fletcher Construction Induction Module
- Paving skills
- Small machinery skills
- Digging and hand spreading
- Reading plans
- Health and Safety
Credits & Qualification
- Your course earns you credits towards a National Certificate in Civil Infrastructure (level 2) Qualification.
- You will then continue to gain credits as you train on the job.
- The National Infrastructure Qualification normally takes three years. With For Real, you could to complete it in half that time.
